A coloured pencil drawing of a raised, clenched fist with red painted nails. The words 'be kind to yourself' and a small outlined heart sit on the wrist in fine grey lettering, shown as a tattoo design. Mules came up Corran Gap every autumn, and every autumn the toll-keeper, Eamon Vail, held out his hand for a penny and made a fist of it. Nobody argued with that fist. It had put a drover into the beck and a horse-dealer's son into the snow, and the pass had learned to pay without a word.

One October a girl came up the track with a grey goat on a rope and no coin at all. She carried a bundle of letters for the innkeeper at Low Scar and had a cough that rattled like a loose shutter. Eamon lifted his fist. She studied it for a long moment, the way a person studies weather, then said, "That must be tiring to hold all day."

Nobody had ever said anything like that to him. He had no answer, so he let her through, and when the first snow came down thick that night he found her sheltering in his hut with the goat steaming beside the stove. She talked the way the beck ran, never stopping, and somewhere between the kettle and the second cup he noticed his fingers had uncurled on his knee without asking him.

By the thaw the girl had gone down to Low Scar, and Eamon had painted a board for the gatepost in careful grey letters: be kind to yourself, with a small heart beneath. Travellers laughed at it. The drovers stopped laughing when they saw him wave them through with an open palm, and the penny, when he took one at all, went into a tin marked for the goat's winter hay.
