Two wrists pressed together, each with a matching black fine line infinity symbol tattoo reading love sister on the inner wrist.

Matching infinity tattoos on wrists

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are clasped together with the inner wrists facing the camera. Each wrist carries a matching black infinity symbol with the word love on the left loop and sister on the right, written in thin script. The ink is black against pale skin, and the plain light background keeps the focus on the tattoos.

Don't you touch that rope, it's still warm from the generator, and I've had a bellyful of children today. Sit where I can see your hands. Right. The Dorrigan sisters came off the Hull road in spring 1953 with one caravan, a lurcher called Tuppence and a ride nobody else would buy, a figure-of-eight switchback painted the colour of a robin's egg. Ada was the steady one. Mae was the one who climbed onto the cars while they were still moving.

They ran that ride for six summers, and the whole fair knew the rule: you never pass the other car on the crossover. The two cars meet at the middle of the eight, and whichever sister reaches out first takes the other's ticket stub. One August, Mae took a job on the coast with a travelling boxing booth and didn't say goodbye. Ada sat in the empty car every night after the lamps went out, running the loop with nobody to bring it round.

Come September a postcard arrived with no stamp, just a drawing of a looped line and two words in Mae's fast hand: love, sister. Ada didn't write back. She had the gate sign repainted in gold, and the sign-writer charged her double for the curls on the L and the S, because he said nobody ever gets a loop to close on the first try.

Mae came back the week the fair packed up for winter, and they rode the Eight once more with the lights switched off. Neither of them won the crossover. They met in the middle with both hands out, and that's the trick of it, child: you can't pass a loop, you can only keep going round until you're both facing the same way. Now go on, your mum's waiting, and tell her the rope was warm.
