Fine line heart on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of a pale inner wrist and forearm with a small, single-line tattoo of a heart with an open looping detail inside. The linework is thin, even and black, with no shading. The plain light grey background keeps the small design as the clear focus.

Margaret had sorted the lost property at Halden Road for eleven years, and she knew the difference between things people forgot and things they left behind on purpose. Umbrellas were forgotten. Wedding rings left on the buffet counter were usually forgotten too, though not always by the right person. The envelope that arrived on a Tuesday in March, addressed to nobody, belonged to a third category she had no name for.

Inside was a single sheet torn from an exercise book, folded in four. Someone had drawn a heart without lifting the pen. The line dipped in at the bottom point, looped twice inside the top curves like a child's signature, and came back to where it began. No name, no train time, no note. Margaret turned it over, found nothing, and smoothed it flat under the lamp because she needed something to do with her hands.
She kept it in the drawer for six weeks. Commuters came and went with their bags and their small, hopeless questions. On the seventh Thursday a man with rain on his shoulders asked whether anyone had handed in a green notebook. She asked him to describe the inside. He laughed and said, "Mostly lists. And a drawing I never finished."
He had sketched it on the bench on platform four, he said, the afternoon the 17:40 was cancelled and he had nowhere to be but there. He had meant to close the loop and never had. Margaret slid the sheet across the counter. He looked at it for a long time, then folded it into his coat without a word, and the last thing she saw through the glass was the single unbroken line going out with him into the rain.
