He lifted the cloth. The birds sat very still, the way birds do when they have decided not to be seen. He counted them with the stub of his pencil, one, two, three, then frowned at the ledger in front of him. Starlings, he said, did not need papers. They needed to be let go on the far bank, where the wind came off the hills and the fields lay open. So she walked down to the water with the basket held against her chest and waited for him to look away.

On the far bank she lifted the lid. The first bird went up and turned sharp against the grey sky, then the second, then the third, and they flew low over the reeds in a line that broke and joined again like a sentence being written. The guard watched from his hut and did not shout. Some said he wrote a number on his ledger that afternoon, three, and fed the page to the stove.

Marta stood until the birds were only specks above the water, then crossed back over with an empty basket. Nobody at the crossing ever asked her what she had carried.
