Yin yang cats on upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A circular yin yang design shows one black cat and one white cat interlocking within a black outline. The black sections are solid fill with clean edges, while the white section is left as bare skin with fine outlines defining the cat shapes. The tattoo sits centrally on the upper back against plain skin, with the image cropped tightly around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Come closer, the lot of you, before the rain gets into the bread. Yes, you in the green coat. Now, the cats of Saltergate market did not get on, and everyone knew it. The black cat, Morwen, sat on the fishmonger's scales, and the white cat, Pim, sat on the cheese stall's awning, and each one thought the other a thief of the good dry spots.

Then came the autumn the drains backed up and the whole square ran an inch deep. Morwen and Pim were both stranded on the same iron bollard, hissing at each other across the black water, until the bollard began to sink. Neither would swim. So they pressed back to back and turned slowly, the way you'd turn a wheel, and the water they stirred ran round and round in a ring. Somewhere in that spinning they found they were making a single shape, one half dark and one half light, each with a small eye of the other's colour.

The market still talks about it. The stallholders swear the rain runs in a ring around that old bollard even now, and that if you stand there at closing time you can see two cats curled in the puddle, each one nosing the tail of the other. Pim's bakery has a sign cut in that same ring. Nobody paid for the sign. Morwen would have hated that.
