The lorry driver had been living out of the same paper bag since Calais, and by the time Nadia reached his cab the burger wrapper had gone translucent with grease. She ran her torch along the dashboard, past a foil parcel that smelled of pepperoni, and let it settle on the crushed drink can rolling against the pedal. He said it was rubbish, which she could see for herself, and that he was taking it to the bin at the next service station, which she doubted.

She picked it up anyway. Inside, wedged deep where the metal had folded like paper, sat something black and heavy with a dozen flat faces. Her first thought was a stone, then a fake one, then something worse. The driver went quiet in the way people do when they have decided to lie and are now deciding how well.

He said it was his daughter's. It turned out to be a twenty-sided die from a board game the girl had hunted for three weeks, lost somewhere between Kent and a motorway lay-by, and had since been too proud to ask for back. Nadia turned it under the light and read the numbers aloud. The driver laughed, then stopped, then laughed again, the sort of laugh that needed a second go.

She wrote nothing on her form. She handed the die back, kept the can for the recycling bin in her office, and told him to eat something green before he reached Dover. He said he would try. She knew from his face he would not, and she found that she did not mind.
