Temporary tattoo designs: cactus, ice cream and unicorn

Colour · Flash

Three separate printed designs sit on white paper squares over a dotted grey surface. The cactus and flowers are outlined in dark lines with flat colour, the ice cream cone and lollipop use simple coloured fills, and the unicorn is a single blue silhouette with a lilac and pink wash. The designs are spaced apart in a loose, scattered arrangement.

Nobody sold the unicorn on the Saturday, which is the first thing you should know. Our Dilys had it pinned to the awning of the ice cream van at Wrenhollow fete, a pale sheet of paper the size of a playing card, and by four o'clock the thing had worked loose and gone walking.

It went up past the bunting and through the tombola, leaving a trail of sugar on the grass. Old Mr Atkins swore he saw it trot straight over the lollipop stall, shaking its mane so the stripes spun. The cactus came next, a prickly green thing from the tea tent that had been sulking since somebody said it looked like a pickle. It followed the unicorn at a dignified pace, knocking the flowers off the hats of the Women's Institute as it passed.

By dusk they had reached the duck pond, where the two cherries sat on the bank like a pair of red-faced aunts waiting for the bus. The ice cream, which had been melting all afternoon, finally gave up and slid down the slope in one pink dollop, and the ducks came out to see what the fuss was.

Dilys found them at last under the churchyard wall, the unicorn nosing the cactus as if asking the way home. She peeled them off the stone one by one and pressed them back onto their card. Stay put, the lot of you, she said. Nobody has moved since, and the cherries, to be fair, have never once complained.
