Dear Ottoline,

Your parcel came, the transfers squashed flat in a padded envelope, and Mum has already declared the whole sheet a fire hazard because the skull one has glitter on its bow. I have peeled off the coffin and stuck it inside my wardrobe door, where it looks very dignified next to the posters of the Vesper Lane band you pinned up last summer. The zigzag strips went on my knuckles. Dad says it makes me look like a boxer who has lost a bet.

The heart with the dark striped fringe is for Rosalind, though I suspect she will not thank me for the wording. Scary cute, it says, in that wobbly pink script. She has always complained that the girls at Hallowmere call her a scarecrow with a fringe, so I thought a bit of cheek might do her good. Nobody at the school gate can argue with a slogan that loud. The chic in freak one went on the lunchbox, and the teachers have already asked me twice what it means.

The last sticker is the teal stitched heart with nothing written on it. I have kept it back for you. Somebody has to be the first to carry a fresh start out of the envelope, and you have always been the braver of the two of us. Stick it somewhere the new teachers will see on Monday, and write and tell me where it ended up.

All my love, and stop eating the glitter, Maud
