Animal flash sheet in bold black line
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A flash sheet of thirteen stylised animals arranged in two columns, including a bear, fox, zebra, hippo, rhino, camel, elephant, deer, buffalo, antelope, giraffe, lion and tiger. The designs use bold, even outlines with simple detail, and many bodies are filled with stripes, checks or blocks of pattern. The sheet is drawn in black ink on white with no colour.

The reunion was held in the old schoolroom, and someone had thought to pin the animal sheet back on the wall where it had always hung. Thirteen beasts in two columns, drawn in one even black line by Maud Ellery, who had left the village the year after the river froze and never sent word. Everyone remembered the sheet. Nobody remembered who had drawn the first stripe.

Maud's grandmother used to tell it plainly, the way she told everything. When the mill pond went low in August, the animals came down off the paper to drink, and they came down in their own patterns, because a beast drawn with its stripes on is a beast that will not be hunted for its hide. The zebra had its bars, the giraffe its brown squares, the lion a mane like a cartwheel. The tiger was last, drawn when the ink was almost gone, so it got only enough stripes to keep it honest.
Then at the reunion, Dennis Hart, who had once cut his initials into the lion's back with a compass point, found the sheet had been mended. The scratch had been filled in with fresh black, neat as a stitch, and under the tiger someone had written in small capitals: COME BACK WHEN YOU ARE READY.
Nobody could say who had written it. The schoolroom windows were shut. When they took the sheet down to fold it, the tiger's paper was damp in one corner, and a faint print of a paw showed where it had walked off the page.
