Diamond column tattoo on a spine overlooking a beach
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph shows a woman seen from behind, with her hair falling over her shoulders and a thin strap visible on her back. A vertical column of small diamond or dot shapes runs down the centre of her spine, drawn in dark ink with fine, even marks. Behind her, a coastline with palm fronds, a sandy beach with small groups of people and a hazy sea fills the composition.

The boundary men came up the coast road in March with a cart of iron pegs, and by April I had learned to read their chalk marks on the cliff path like a second language. Diamonds, they called them: a lozenge drawn in red paint over every survey point, one above another, so that a man walking the headland could follow the line from the lighthouse down to the cove without a map. My father had been a surveyor before his knees gave out, and he said a diamond was the honest shape for a boundary, because it had no corner that could be argued with.

I was nineteen and angry about nothing in particular, and I took the job of repainting the marks on the weathered stones because nobody else would climb the wet slope. Mrs Tennant from the post office kept a tin of paint on her windowsill for me and asked every morning whether I had fallen off yet. I never did. I went up with a brush and a pot of Venetian red and counted the diamonds aloud, and the sea answered with its own count against the rocks below.
The last mark sat above the small beach where the summer families gathered. Someone had scratched a date into the stone beside it, the year my mother left, and I had never said that to anyone in the village. I painted over the scratch carefully, leaving the diamond whole, and when I looked back down the line from the top I could see every point of it, all the way to the sand, where a child was building a wall that the tide would take by evening.
