Small wave tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of a raised hand with teal painted nails and stacked beaded bracelets, against a blurred seashore. A small black wave outline sits on the inner forearm just above the wrist, drawn in thin, even linework with no shading. The palette is muted, with the ink appearing dark against warm skin and the soft pink-blue sky and surf behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The harbour master at Ostia wanted the tally by the fourth hour, and the grain ship from Alexandria had not yet shown its sail beyond the mole. I stood on the wet stones with my wax tablet balanced on one forearm, stylus in my teeth, counting hulls the way my father taught me: by their bows, not their names. Eleven had come in on the morning swell. Two sat low in the water, which meant amphorae of oil, and one had lost its mast entirely.

A boatman named Lucanus shouted up that the Alexandrian was grounded on the bar off the north jetty. He had a bruise along his jaw and the grin of a man who had won a wager. I asked him how he knew. He pointed his oar at the water, where the swell bent, folded and broke white over something hidden. "Look at the wave," he said. "It stands up when it finds a hull." I had watched that sea for twenty years and never once seen it that way.

I scratched a small curl into the corner of the tablet, a line rising and falling, and wrote the grain ship's name beside it. Then I smoothed out the false tally and wrote the true count, which was twelve, not eleven. The harbour master would be cross. Let him be cross. A clerk who counts only what floats is no clerk at all.

By dusk the Alexandrian had been towed in, its cargo dry, and the little curl was still at the tablet's edge when I packed it away. I never smoothed it out. The sums were wiped clean every night, but that mark stayed.
