Flock of birds in flight with let it go script

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A set of six solid black bird silhouettes in various flight poses, scattered across a white background. Beneath them, the words let it go are written in a fine, slightly uneven handwritten script. The composition is airy, with generous white space and the birds spread diagonally from upper centre toward the right.

Mind the loose board by the cloakroom, it's been loose since the Coronation and nobody's bothered, because it gives the girls something to shriek about. Now where was I. Ah, the pigeons.

Walter Pennock kept six birds in a loft above the Carrick Palais, and every Saturday, when the band struck up the last waltz, he'd slide back the skylight and let them out over the floor. Couples would stop dancing and tilt their heads back. The birds would go round the chandeliers once, bold as brass, then drop out over the harbour wall. His wife Edie said it was showing off. Walter said they needed the practice.

Then came the winter Edie took ill, and the skylight stayed shut. Nobody asked him why. In March he came down the back stairs carrying the cage with its door hanging open, sat on the edge of the bandstand, and said, 'Well, go on, then.' He didn't shake them out. He stood under the open skylight with his hand on the frame, and they went up one at a time, the smallest one lingering on the rail a long while before it followed the others.

The band played that waltz through again without anyone asking. Walter danced it alone under the grey sky, slow, with his hat in his other hand, and not one soul in the hall thought it strange. Mind the board on your way out.
