Flock of birds on a wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand and inner forearm show a flock of about seven small solid black bird silhouettes, scattered diagonally from the wrist up the arm. The right side of the image repeats the same set of birds on a plain white background, showing the design more clearly. The birds have soft, slightly ragged edges with no shading, and the ink is black on pale skin against a patterned cream fabric.

Mrs Pennock kept the register for Gull Rock House in a black ledger with a broken spine, and every August she wrote the guests in one column and the birds in the other. The guests were easy to lose. The birds were not. Seven swifts had nested under the eaves of the top floor since before the war, and she insisted they were paying lodgers too, at the rate of a shilling a flight.

The summer I turned sixteen I was given the job of carrying breakfast up to Room Four, where a retired schoolmaster from Preston wanted his eggs runny and his newspaper folded to the crossword. He liked to talk about the birds. He said they never landed, not once from May to August, that they ate and slept and courted on the wing, and I didn't believe him until the morning the wind came off the bay so hard the whole flock dropped low over the promenade like a handful of thrown ash.
On the last Sunday of the month they went. There was no argument and no ceremony. Mrs Pennock stood at the back door with her cardigan clutched shut and said they knew the weather before the wireless did. I watched them climb over the chimney stacks and bank out towards the Lune, small and ragged at the edges as burnt paper, and I thought of the ledger, the empty column, and the room that would stay made up for nobody.
Mrs Pennock closed the book. "Seven paid up," she said, "and not one of them owes me a penny." Then she wrote the date beside the blank space and underlined it twice, the way you would mark a debt you were glad to carry.
