Woman in a white V-neck tee with colourful traditional-style tattoos of roses, flowers and a woman's face on both upper arms and forearms.

Floral and portrait tattoos on both arms

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A woman in a white V-neck t-shirt printed with the words Once Upon A Time stands with her hands on her hips, wearing grey acid-wash jeans. Both arms are covered in colour tattoos, including roses, blossoms and what appears to be a woman's face on the left forearm. Bold outlines and saturated reds, oranges and greens dominate against the plain white backdrop.

Dear Ada,

The wagon finally broke its axle outside Chesterfield, so we are stuck with the fairground lorry until Thursday and I have had three days to think about the Ferris wheel. Mr Haskett wants the gondolas repainted before the autumn fair, and he wants them to look like they came from somewhere far away. I told him the only far away I know is the back of a tin of enamel. He laughed and gave me a brush anyway.

I have done the rose first, on the gondola nearest the ticket hut. Deep crimson, a black outline as thick as a pencil, the kind of rose our father used to paint on the side of the painted wagon before the council moved us on. Then the blossoms along the rail, pale pink with a hard line of ink round each petal, because the old sign-writers always said a petal without an edge will drift off the board. Mr Haskett says nobody looks at gondolas. I told him the children do, and children are the only honest critics we have.

Yesterday the wind got into the tent and knocked over my pot of green. I cried into the sawdust like a fool, then I stopped, because Vesna from the knife-throwing booth handed me a rag and said the cherry trees in her village always came back after frost. So I started again, greener this time, and I think it is better for the mess.

Enclosed is a pressed petal from the last one that survived. Keep it in your Bible, the one you never read. The paint on the third gondola is still wet, so do not open the wagon until it dries, and tell Mum the lorry is fine.

Love, Tomas
