The ivy had got into the chapel gate again by the week of the wedding, so Hannah Coyle went down with the kitchen shears before breakfast and cut it back to the stone. Her grandmother had planted that ivy the spring the gate was hung. Every year it tried to climb the iron, every year someone cut it, and every year it came back greener. Hannah told the vicar as much, and he did not see the point of it.

Tom Ashdown wanted the wedding plain. He had a bad knee and a poor opinion of flowers that needed watering, and his mother had already ordered a holly wreath from the shop in Little Marlow. Hannah said nothing about the wreath. Instead she took three cuttings from the ivy, long stems with the young leaves still folded tight, and set them in a jug on the windowsill to see what they would do.

By the Saturday the jug had roots like white thread, and the leaves had opened flat and dark. Hannah wound the stems through her bouquet and tied the last of them to the gatepost, and when the bells stopped she walked up the path with the gate standing open behind her and the old cut ends already sprouting green along the stone.

Tom's mother asked where the holly had gone and was told it was still in its box in the hall. She opened her mouth to say something sharp, then looked at the jug on the sill, where a fourth shoot had come up overnight and was already reaching for the glass.
