Sailor girl flash on a brown t-shirt
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A black line drawing of a smiling woman with curled hair, wearing a tilted sailor hat and a sailor collar with a knotted neckerchief, shown as a printed design on a heathered brown t-shirt. The linework is bold with hatched shading on the hair, collar and neckerchief. The design is black on a muted brown garment and is centred on the chest of the shirt.

Now you'll want the true version, not the one they sing in the Lamplighter, so hush and pass the rum. Her name was Win Harrow, and she came down to Pilchard Quay in the spring the gulls went quiet, carrying a canvas bag and a hat she'd taken off a dead purser's hook. She wore it tilted, the way you'd tilt a hat at a man you didn't mean to marry.

The brig Mary Ankle, out of the Kingdom of Lessory, needed a cabin boy that season, and her master, a bent man called Ostle, took Win on for a shilling and a promise never to show above deck in daylight. She kept that promise for nine days. On the tenth, a squall came off the Cold Teeth, every hand was lashed to something, and the topsail sheet jammed on the mainmast. Win went up anyway, because she was the only one light enough to clear it, and she did.
Coming down, she found Ostle at the rail with his neckerchief undone and his fingers too cold to knot it. She tied it for him with a sweetheart's hitch, the twist the old sailmakers used, and he never asked her name again. The crew sailed under her knot for thirty years, and no master in Lessory has tied his collar since without a girl standing by.
Ostle's own neckerchief is folded in the harbourmaster's chest to this day, tight as the morning she tied it. If I were you, I wouldn't try to undo it.
