Floral bouquet tattoo on upper chest

Botanical · Chest · Colour · Photo

A small bouquet of red, orange, pink and yellow flowers, including poppies, roses and peony-like blooms with green leaves and stems, sits on the upper chest of a woman wearing a mint green open shirt over a white top. The petals are painted with soft shading and fine detail, and the bouquet tapers downward in a loose, vertical arrangement. The plain white background keeps focus on the tattoo and the skin around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, sit, the kettle's only just gone off and the story won't wait for it to cool. You want to know why Old Maud on the north shore grew poppies between her cabbages? Hush, I'm getting to it.

Her husband Tomas went out on the ferry the spring the bell broke, and he took a jar of peonies from her yard because she'd told him she would not have him come home without something pretty to show for the sea. He never came back with the jar. The jar came back, rolled up in the tide and wedged under the harbour steps, with one red poppy still stuck in the neck of it. Now, the poppies on this island only grow where the wheat has been burned, so everyone knew what that meant before anyone said it aloud.

So Maud went to the garden wall, where the old roses climb over the stones like they're trying to get out, and she cut every bloom she could reach. Orange, rust, the pink of a cheap sugared sweet, yellow like a yolk. She tied them with fishing line and carried them down to the water in the grey hour before the boats go out. She threw them one at a time, and each one she named after a thing he'd said to her.

The tide took them all but one. That one floated back to the steps and caught on her boot, and she laughed, the first time anyone had heard her laugh since spring. She kept it. Pressed it in the book where she keeps the weather.
