Colour leg tattoo beside a red polka dot skirt
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A model wearing a red polka dot pencil skirt with a black high waist belt and black heels, photographed from the waist down with the head cropped out. A colourful tattoo with yellow, red and blue areas covers the lower leg, and black and grey tattoos run along both arms. The plain white background keeps the focus on the body and clothing.

Marjorie Pell had not been back to the Sunderland Road reunion in twenty-two years, and she told herself she was only going to see whether Dennis Bray still had a sign-writer's steady hand. The school hall smelled of floor polish and warm squash. Someone had strung red crepe paper along the beams, and the cloakroom hatch still carried a faded notice about pencils being returned.

She found Dennis by the trestle table, slicing Battenberg with a knife he had plainly brought from home. He had gone grey at the temples but he still held the cake like a letter he was about to lay flat. "You owe me a swallow," he said. In the fourth form they had taken turns painting the tuck shop shutters on Saturdays. She had done the bird in blue and yellow with a red throat, badly, and he had done the lettering, and Mr Haskett had made them scrub the whole thing off with turpentine.
"I kept the tin," Dennis said, and fetched it from under the coats. Inside, the brushes were wrapped in a tea towel and the paint had dried to a crust. On the lid was a thumbprint of blue. Folded beneath was their old tracing sheet, the bird drawn in pencil with its tail cut short by a crease down the middle. Marjorie laughed, then found she was not laughing, and Dennis passed her a napkin without making anything of it.
She dipped the smallest brush in the tin, added a drop of water from the urn, and on the back of the tracing sheet she finished the tail in one stroke of red that ran off the edge of the paper, as though the bird had somewhere else to be.
