Floral vine tattoo on the ankle beside nude heels

Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows two long legs in nude lace-up heels against a plain grey backdrop, with a tattoo visible on the ankle of the leg on the left of the frame. The tattoo appears to be a floral design with curling vines and leaves, drawn in fine lines with soft shading. It is rendered in muted grey and dark tones, and the composition places the ankle and heel at the centre of the frame.

Mind the step, the stone's loose there, always has been since my father's day. Now sit by the grate and let me tell you about the ivy on the back wall of Harrow Ley, because it did not grow the way ivy grows, and the Pargeter sisters knew it.

That winter the frost came in November and stayed until March. The beasts were housed, the turnips were black in the clamp, and Nan Pargeter went out each morning with a bill hook to cut the vine back from the dairy window. Every morning it had come back overnight, grey-green and curling, a single stem running up the brick and splitting into leaves no bigger than a thumbnail. Her sister Ada swore it moved toward the kitchen. Nan said that was nonsense and went out again with the hook.

On the last day of February the vine had flowered. Small pale blooms, tight as knuckles, in the middle of frost. Nan stood looking at them a long while with the hook hanging from her hand, and then she set it down on the step, went in, and put the kettle on. She never cut it again. The sisters left the gate open and the vine took the whole south wall, and when the old house was pulled down it was the vine they carried out first, root and all, in a barrow to the orchard.

That is the whole of it. Some say the vine was looking for warmth. Ada said it was looking for someone who would stop and pay it attention. Nan said nothing, but she left the hook on the step for thirty years, and nobody ever moved it.
