Floral mandala tattoo on the thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two large flower heads, one with a dense dotted centre, plus a smaller open bloom, leaves and curling vine swirls arranged in a mandala-like cluster. The linework is fine and dark, and the petals are built up with stippled dots rather than solid fill. The photograph is taken from above at a slight angle, with the thigh filling most of the frame and a hand holding a mug of tea in the lower left.

Above the Gallen Pass, where the road gave up and became a goat track, a widow called Maren Ost kept the only well. Every spring the snowmelt came down in a rush, and every spring she climbed the stony slope with a bucket on each arm to see what the water had brought.

One year it brought a boy. He was thin and half frozen, with a canvas satchel full of seeds that had swollen in the wet. He said his father had dyed cloth in the valley town and died owing money, and that he was walking to the coast to find work on the ships. Maren gave him bread and a blanket and told him the pass took three days in good weather and nobody crossed in bad.
He stayed through the thaw. He cleared the drain channels and mended the wall, and in the evenings he drew in the dust with a stick. First a circle, then a ring of petals, then a ring of smaller circles inside those, dotted at the centre, until the whole thing closed like a hand made into a fist and opened again. Maren had never seen a pattern do that. She asked him what it was called. He said his father called it a flower that remembers the sun.
The seeds were a mountain poppy that grew nowhere else. By midsummer the slope above the well was in bloom, each flower as wide as a plate and drawn just like the one in the dust. The valley folk climbed up to see them and said the pass was blessed. Maren only noticed that the boy had gone in the night, that the satchel was gone from its nail, and that she had found, pressed under the flat stone by the well, a single petal drawn in ink with a dot at its centre.
