The kiosk on platform two opens at six, and by the time the 6.14 pulls in you have already cut the stems for the day. Peonies are a bad bet this late in the year, which is why Mrs Okafor's order for forty of them made you swear at the phone. Still, the grower in Lincolnshire sent a box that smelled of wet soil and ink, the petals tight as fists, and you spend the first hour pricking the cellophane apart with a pin so they can open in the cold.

Nobody buys peonies at a railway kiosk. They buy sandwiches, cheap umbrellas, a paper with yesterday's crossword half filled in. But on the Thursday the rain turns sideways across the canopy, a man in a grey suit stops at your hatch and asks for whatever is the most stubborn thing you have. You hand him the one bloom that has finally split open, its outer petals layered like cupped hands, and he pays with exact change and a look that suggests he has been carrying something heavy for a long time.
He does not come back. The next week the 6.14 runs late, and so do you, and the peonies outlast every other stem in the bucket. Their shadows hang on the tiles like fine dark lace. When the stationmaster asks why you keep the wilting ones at all, you tell him the flower is not finished until the last petal lets go, and he nods as if that were a timetable.
