Ornamental underbust mandala tattoo

Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A large black ornamental design sits across the centre of the torso below the bust, with a central teardrop motif surrounded by scrolling lace-like patterns. Fine dotted shading and stippled texture build up the petals and filigree, while strings of small dangling drops hang beneath the main shape. The image is black ink on skin only, with a dark crop top and a maroon skirt framing the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Aunt Mair kept her bobbins in a biscuit tin that had once held Bath Oliver biscuits, and she never let anyone touch the pins until she had counted them twice. By the last week of August the pear trees at Hollins Farm were so heavy that the lower branches touched the grass, and my job was to climb the ladder and fill the sack while she sat in the shade of the packing shed working her pattern.

The lace was for the chapel harvest supper. Every year she made one piece, a yard of pattern, and every year it came out finer than the year before. She pinned the design to a cushion on her knee and talked the whole time about her mother, who had taught her in a kitchen that smelled of vinegar. 'Lace is only holes that agree with each other,' she said, which I wrote down because I liked it.

On the last evening the wind came up off the Wye and the pears started dropping. I found her under the tree with the finished piece draped over the hedge, and the light came through it so that every thread threw its own small shadow onto the grass. Along the edge hung a row of tiny weighted drops, one for each pin, each one catching a little of the sun as it swung.

'Put a plum in the middle of that,' she said, 'and it would look like something you'd want to keep.'

I did not tell her it already looked like something you could not have. I just held the pear I had picked and waited for the drops to stop moving.
