Symmetrical peony and bellflower chain design

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows two large peony blooms mirrored on either side of the composition, with smaller rosebuds, leaves and clusters of bell-shaped flowers hanging below them. Thin chains with small droplet pendants loop between the flowers, joining the two halves. The design uses fine black outlines with dotted and hatched shading on the petals and leaves, set against a plain light background with no colour.

They were still arguing about the bees when the chain went up between the gateposts. Ida and Sel Ansell had shared the walled garden at the end of Mill Lane since their father died, and every August they fought over which side of it the bees favoured. Ida's side had the peonies, great heavy heads the size of cabbages, and the bellflowers that hung from the wall in blue clusters. Sel's side had the apple trees and the roses, and a jar of her mother's old glass beads she had threaded into a line of droplets.

Sel carried the chain from one post to the other on a Tuesday, loop by loop, and fixed it at the top of the wall where Ida could not reach without a ladder. Ida said nothing for three days. Then she walked her half of the garden with a basket and cut every bellflower she could find, and hung them from the chain so the bells knocked against the glass beads whenever the wind came down off the hill. The lane could hear them from the Crown inn. Old Pim at the forge said it sounded like two women trying to agree without speaking.

The frost came early that year, a week before the apples were in. It took the peonies on Ida's side black at the edges and left Sel's roses standing. Neither sister would cut the chain to save her own blooms, and neither would ask the other for help. It was Pim's wife who finally walked up the lane with a pair of shears and a loaf, and cut the chain in the middle without asking anyone.

The next spring the peonies on both sides grew up over the gate and met in the middle, and the bellflowers came up through the same roots. Nobody replaced the chain. The droplets hung where the gap had been, and when the wind came off the hill the bells rang only if the two sisters walked through the gate together.
