Floral scrollwork tattoo on shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind, wearing a green tank top with a red flower in her hair and holding a red cup. Her shoulder carries a dense, ornate design of flowers, leaves and curling scrolls, drawn with fine dark linework and some solid fill. The ink is a single dark tone against the skin, and the design sits in the upper part of the frame with the rest of the image given to the room behind her.

Every winter the snow came down the Harrow Pass faster than a man could walk it, and the carriers learned to wait at the inn at the foot of the slope. Greta Vell, who kept the inn, had a habit of drawing on her shutters with a stick of burnt cork. She drew scrolls and leaves and little flowers, the same shapes the frost made on the glass each morning, and when people asked why, she said the pass liked to be told what it was looking at.

Her son Tobin did not believe this. He was twelve and thought a shutter was only a shutter. One February, with the bell on the mule-track ringing and no lantern in sight, he took the cork from her apron and went out into the drift to the first cairn, where the path bent left toward the chasm. He drew a coil on the flat stone there, then another, the way his mother did, and his fingers went white before he was done.
The lantern came up the slope an hour later. The carrier said the stone had been dark on the way up and bright when he passed it, as if someone had inked it in lamp oil, and he had followed the curls round the bend without once looking down at his feet.
Tobin was given the cork after that. Nobody asked him to swear anything. The spring after, he drew the first cairn's scroll again so the snowmelt would find its way down the same line, and the flowers on the stone opened in the thaw as though they had been waiting for him to finish them.
