Magnolia outline on a shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A large magnolia bloom is drawn in black outline on the shoulder and upper arm, with a simple centre of stamens and a few open petals spreading across the skin. The linework is clean and even with little or no shading, so the flower reads mainly through its outline. The photograph is taken from behind in dim light, with a red strap and a thin necklace visible beside the tattoo.

Ada Penrose came back to the village for the reunion with a paper bag of biscuits and no plan for the afternoon. The hall smelled of floor polish and urn tea. Nobody there had changed their minds about her, so she sat by the window and waited for someone to ask.

It was Miriam Groves who came over first, carrying two cups she did not offer. She said the tree was still standing, that the council had wanted it cut for the new road and the village had refused. Ada remembered the day they had all crowded round it with their arms linked, and how the petals had come down on them like loose paper. Miriam said the flowers were too heavy for the branches now, that they bent low and nobody picked them. Ada said she had heard that about magnolias, that the bloom comes before the leaf and asks for nothing.
They walked down Harrow Lane after the tea, past the closed mill and the bakery that was a phone shop now. The tree was bare at the base and wide at the top, its petals browning at the edges and still pale in the middle. Miriam stood under it with her hands in her coat. Ada reached up and took one fallen bloom from the wet grass, turned it over, and pressed it flat against her palm. It was still cool. She held it out, and Miriam, after a long moment, took it.
