The abbot wanted lilies in the margin of the psalter by Candlemas, and I had given him bindweed instead. I had spent three evenings on it by the north window, where the February light holds longest, tracing each trumpet flower in a single dark line and then washing the petals with grey until they looked pressed between two stones. Lilies are what a psalter is for, Brother Osric told me, and I said the abbot had been dreaming of lilies since Michaelmas, and bindweed was what grew on the wall where nobody had the heart to pull it.

Osric kept the infirmary garden and a shelf of pressed leaves that smelled of dust and camphor. He did not laugh when he saw the page. He took off his spectacles, held the vellum to the window, and said the bindweed had come up through a crack in the chapter house foundations forty years ago. Every spring since, somebody had cut it back, and every spring it had come again, a little further along the stones.
The abbot came at vespers and stood a long time over the open book. I waited for the rebuke. Instead he asked how I had managed the shadows under the leaves, and I told him it was only patience and a brush with three hairs. He nodded, closed the psalter gently, and said the lilies could wait until the thaw. When I went out at dusk, the bindweed on the wall had opened its white throats to the last of the light, and I understood that nobody was going to pull it up that year.
