Floral tattoo on ribs during a headstand
Botanical · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A woman in black leggings holds an inverted yoga pose, balanced on her head on a mat with her legs raised. A floral tattoo with leaves and a vertical line sits across her midriff and side ribs, with soft grey shading. The monochrome photograph shows a room with a white chest of drawers and sheer curtains behind her.

The bulb came off the Lima boat in a tin that had once held boot polish, and Mrs Ada Pollard paid for it with three shillings and a look that said she had been cheated on the freight. She carried it up the hill to Wrenfield in both hands, the way the nursery men had warned her never to carry anything living, and set it on the sill of the potting shed where the November light came in grey and thin.

By March it had sent up a single stem, straight as a plumb cord, with three leaves at the top that opened like cupped hands. Ada measured it each morning against the door frame in soft pencil, and each morning the mark sat a little higher. Her nephew Tom laughed at her for talking to it. She told him the bulb had come a long way and deserved to be addressed in plain English.
The bloom came in the second week of June, on a night when the wind off the moor blew the shed door open and the lamp went out. Ada found it at dawn with its petals spread wide, pale at the edges and shadowed grey at the heart, as though someone had breathed on it and left a thumbprint. Tom came up the path with the milk and stopped at the gate. Neither of them touched it. She fetched the seed ledger instead, pressed one leaf flat between its pages, and wrote beside it in her square hand: not for sale.
