Sleeve tattoo on a woman in a headstand

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman in a strappy bikini balances upside down in a headstand, with her head and forearms on a pale stone surface. A dense sleeve of tattoos covers her upper arm and forearm, appearing mainly in black ink with grey shading. Palm fronds, shrubs and a sea horizon sit behind her under a soft, pale sky.

Gran had taught him the trick years back, when he was small and sulky. Put your head on the ledge, she said, and the sea comes up to meet the sky. He had laughed and called her daft. Now he pressed his palms flat on the warm stone, lifted his legs against the pale evening, and tipped the whole harbour over.

From there the horizon sat above him like a lid, and the boats came round the point upside down, their masts pointing at the clouds, a fleet hanging from the sky. He counted them. Four, then five. The Marigold was not among them, and the men in the lane would have something to say about that.

He lowered his legs slowly, blood rushing back into his ears, and the harbour snapped the right way up again. Five boats, all rowing in with their lamps lit. He coiled the rope over his shoulder and walked home to tell her she had been right about the view, and that he would not be needing the line after all.
