Woman in a handstand with arm tattoo by the sea

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman in a bikini-style top and bottoms holds an inverted yoga pose on a concrete terrace, with her legs raised and her head lowered towards the ground. Dark tattoo work covers her visible upper arm and forearm, and her hand rests on the concrete. Greenery, a palm frond, a wooden railing and the sea sit behind her under a pale sky.

The railing had been Tomas's idea, and for two summers he refused to say why. He cut it from a ship's deck plank the tide had dropped at the harbour mouth, sanded it on the terrace of the old fish market, and bolted it to posts that Mrs Okonedo's husband had sunk into the concrete before the storm. The palm came later, the year the wind took the one by the chapel. Lucía, who ran the bakery and had opinions about everything that grew, said the new sapling would never survive the salt. Tomas said nothing. He went out in the dark with a bucket of fresh water and a sack of gravel, and by morning it was standing. By August its fronds were shading the terrace where people left their sandals to walk barefoot on the warm slabs.

What people remember now is the afternoon the boy from the ferry stood on his hands at the rail, legs pointing at the clouds, and refused to come down until the gulls gave up and flew off in a huff. Tomas laughed so hard he had to sit on the bollard. Afterwards nobody believed him when he said he had never seen anyone look at the sea so calmly, upside down, as if the sea were the thing that had turned over.
