Mistress Hale kept the ferry at Ashby Reach for thirty winters, and she never once let a passenger cross without asking what they carried. Most answered honestly. A man with a sack of pewter said so. A boy with a cage said so. The stranger who came down the bank in late October, with a bird inked small and black under his sleeve and nothing else in his hands, said he carried nothing at all.

"Then you won't mind paying in nothing," she said, and poled him over.
On the far bank the river had frozen at its edges, and a lantern hung above the door of the Blackthorn Inn, where the landlord was counting coins and cursing the weather. The stranger sat by the fire until the bird beneath his sleeve stirred and stretched a dark wing towards the warmth. The landlord swore it was only an old crow. Then the bird opened its beak and sang one note that made the pewter jugs ring on their hooks.
After that the snow stopped falling on the village roofs, and the river loosened in a single night, though nobody could say who had asked it. On her next crossing Mistress Hale found a coin lying in the bottom of her boat, pressed flat and still warm. She never asked what it had cost. She only nailed a black feather above the ferry door, and when the ice came again she poled out and did not hurry.
