Skull and rose on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A person in a white lace robe holds one wrist with the other hand, showing a tattoo on the outer forearm. The tattoo shows a skull with a rose-like bloom and dark leaves, drawn with bold black outlines and grey shading, with small areas of green and red ink. The soft, neutral background and natural light keep the focus on the arm and the gold ring with a red stone.

The rose had been growing out of the old king's skull for three summers before anyone at court thought to mention it to the gardener. When Maud Halloran finally climbed down to the crypt beneath the east terrace, the bone had gone soft with green moss, and the bloom had split the jaw wide, petals pushing out between the teeth as though something inside had been holding its breath for a long time.

The chancellor wanted it cut. The new queen had chosen crimson for her coronation gown and insisted that nothing in the palace should be a shade off, so the rose was to be picked before the bells. Maud argued that a bloom grown from bone would not keep in a vase, that its leaves were the colour of old ink and would bruise the silk. The chancellor wrote her a note with three words on it, and she folded it into her apron pocket and went down with her shears before dawn.
She took the stem in a damp linen cloth and carried it up the back stairs like a sleeping child. At the coronation the queen pinned the flower at her shoulder, and for an hour the crimson held. Then the petals darkened from the edges inward, the way a letter goes brown when it has been read too often, and by the feast the leaves had lost their green altogether.
Maud went back to the crypt that night. She set the empty skull on the stone shelf, pressed the cut stem into the soil at its base, and sat with her lamp until the wick guttered. In the last of the light the shadow of the jaw lay across the wall, and the rose had already begun to open again.
