The wreath was already browning at the edges when Mrs Abernathy from number nine came round with her secateurs and a face like a closed purse. Those were my laurels, she said, and I said they were the ones I'd been pruning since Easter, and she said that did not make them mine. We stood there on the pavement arguing about a privet hedge while the milk van idled behind her. Eventually I offered her a slice of seed cake through the gap in the fence, which is how most of the parish disputes in Haddley Lane have ended since 1961.

The trouble was the ring I had woven that morning. I had meant to hang it on the gate for Tom, who was due back from the depot on the Friday train, but I had got the stems tangled and the little blue flowers from the bank had dropped off the thread. I kept it in my coat pocket all afternoon like a bad conscience. When the rain came in sideways over the allotments I pulled it out and found it had kept its shape, bent but whole, the leaves still holding on to each other in a circle that had no start or end to it.

Tom came home that Friday with mud on his boots and a tin of biscuits from the station. I hung the wreath on the back door without a word. He looked at it, looked at me, and said Mrs Abernathy had been round asking for a cutting of the laurel. I said she could have one when she learned to say please. He laughed so hard he had to sit on the step, and the wreath swung gently above us both, the way things do when nobody is in a hurry to take them down.
