Fine line world map, compass and wanderlust script
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with her back turned to the camera shows several small black tattoos on her upper arm and upper back. They include an outlined world map, a compass rose with an arrow and feather-like tip below it, a small paper plane near the shoulder strap, and the word wanderlust written in thin script across the upper back. The fine line work is delicate and the ink is black, set against a blue shuttered wall and a white lace top.

The master had drawn the whole inhabited world on a single sheet of papyrus, and I was the one who had to copy it before the wax dried on the shipping order. My hand shook. Outside the workshop window the harbour lamp was already lit, and the water below smelled of tar and salted fish.

The lines would not sit straight. I had a dividing rule, a bronze compass with one leg worn bright, and a pot of soot ink thinned with gum. The master tapped the sheet where the western coast bent like a drawn bow. "Every line you draw is a promise that someone will sail it," he said. "Draw the wind too, boy. Sailors lie about everything except the wind."
So I drew the wind as a compass rose in the sheet's corner, eight spokes running out from a dot of red ochre, and at its foot I set an arrow whose fletching I gave the grey feather of a heron. Nobody had asked for that. The master laughed and let it stay.
The sheet left on the morning ship, rolled in oilcloth. Weeks later a dockhand brought me a papyrus bird folded from a spoiled scrap of the copy, its wings still marked with my coastlines. He had found it snagged on a mooring rope in Cyrene. Across its breast someone had scratched a single word in Greek, asking for the road. I still have it, and I have never once answered.
