The bulb-seller of Marrow Lane kept his stock on a trestle under a tarpaulin that drummed all afternoon. Rain ran off the edges in ropes, and the shoppers hurried past with their collars up. On the last wet Thursday of October a woman came in from the market with a shopping bag split at the seam. She picked up a clear bulb, turned it over, and held it to the grey light. Inside the glass, a small yarrow had grown from the filament, its clustered heads pale as frost, its feathered leaves curled like sleeping ferns. Tobias had grown it himself the winter his wife died, sealing the seed in with a pinch of soil and a breath of air, and he had never been able to sell it.
"That one's not for sale," he said.
"Then what's it for?"
He didn't know. He had kept it on the shelf for years, the way you keep a letter you cannot answer. The woman waited, rain loud on the tarpaulin, until he said, "For when it's dark, I suppose. So someone remembers the light was ever green."
She bought it for a penny and walked out into the downpour, holding the glass against her chest. Tobias watched her until the crowd swallowed her, then he sat down on the upturned crate and, for the first time in months, let the rain have the street to itself.
