Dear Maud,

Your mother says you have pinned my old alphabet sheet above the bench in the back room, the one with the capitals that look like they have been out dancing. Good. Do not let the loops frighten you. The trick with a looping hand is that the flourish is only a doorway. You come in on the thin stroke, swell on the way down, and leave by the curl, and the next letter waits for you on the other side.
Your cousin's girl wants every place card for Saturday done by hand, sixty-two of them, so you will need steadiness more than cleverness. Use the nib that cracked last spring and do not wipe it on your good cloth. Pencil the baseline first. I know you think you are too old for pencil. Start with the capitals for the names, since they carry the eye. The Ss will try to run away from you, and the Zs will go clean off the edge of the card if you let them.
On Friday I found the card you sent me in March, the one with your own name written four times down the page because you could not decide which E you liked best. I have kept it in the tin with the buttons. Look at it again before you start on the bride and groom, because you already know how it is done. The last one was the best. The tail of the y swung back under the line as if it had somewhere to be in the morning.
Love, Auntie Win
