Follow your dreams script with birds on foot
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a black script tattoo reading "Follow your dreams" across the top of a foot, with a few small bird silhouettes trailing after the final word. The lettering uses thin, flowing linework with some variation in stroke weight, and the birds are simple solid shapes. The ink is dark grey-black on warm skin, and the composition is a close crop with a black heeled shoe framing the lower part of the image.

The rain had been coming sideways across the car park since eight, and by eleven Dad had stopped pretending the awning kept us dry. We sold second-hand paperbacks off trestle tables under a tarpaulin that drummed like a snare. Nobody browses in weather like that. They ducked in, grabbed something they did not need, and ran for the bus.

Except a stranger in a yellow mac, who stood at the postcard box and read every single one. She asked me whether the chalkboard above the stall was true. Dad had written it the year we parked the bread van here for good: FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS, and beneath it, smaller, a row of swallows lifting off the edge of the board. The chalk had faded to ghosts, and the swallows were the first to go.
I told her Dad had given up a post on the railways to sell books, and that he reckoned dreams were like swallows: you had to let them leave before you could see where they were heading. She laughed, and I thought she would walk off. Instead she bought the last postcard of swallows, paid in coins from a purse full of them, and asked if we'd keep the chalk for her next time.
When the rain thinned to a mist, I climbed onto the crate, found the stub of white chalk under the till, and drew one more swallow after the last word, a little lower than the rest. Dad came back with two teas, looked up at the board for a long moment, and said nothing at all. He just handed me the sugar.
