Believe script and bird on finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A finger held to the lips shows the word Believe in thin black cursive script along its length. A fine single line curls down from the lettering to a small black bird silhouette near the base of the finger. The ink is crisp and even on a soft, warmly lit background of lips and chin.

Hush now, and put your bread down, for the old keep of Greymoor has no ears left for shouting, only for thread. Look up past the gatehouse to the arrow slit with the grass growing out of it. Do you see the string? It runs from the stone out over the wall and down to nothing at all, and that is the whole trick of it.

Wenna was the kitchen girl at Greymoor in the year the roof fell in, and she had no use for lords or their lessons. What she had was a ledger page the steward had thrown out, and a pair of hands that could fold anything. She made a small bird from it, all sharp corners and no feathers, and she wrote one word along its wing in her best letters: Believe. Then she tied a single length of flax to its tail and carried it up the tower stair, because she had heard that the wind on the battlements would take anything that was meant to fly.

The soldiers came at dusk the next day, with torches and a great deal of talk about spies. They tore the kitchens apart and found nothing but flour and one very angry cat. Then a stable boy pointed up at the tower, where a thin line caught the last of the light and ran out over the wall like a question. They followed it to the stone and the slit, and there the paper bird was, turning slowly, its word facing the valley.

They never caught Wenna. The string is still tied, if you look close, and the bird is still out there somewhere on the wind. So hush now, and keep your finger to your lips. If you speak while it's flying, it will fall.
