Small heart outline on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small, simple heart outline sits on the ankle of one foot, drawn in thin black linework with no shading. The skin is shown in close framing against black leggings and black pointed-toe heels on a pale, blurred pavement. The single tattoo is the clear focal point, placed low on the ankle beside the shoe.

Dear Marion,

The big top came down on Tuesday, folded the way Mr Haskell always folded it, corners first, so the canvas could be hauled off the field in one piece. We have three wagons, a generator that coughs, and eleven people who still answer to the word circus. The lions went to a sanctuary in Shropshire last spring. The elephant died in February, and nobody in the company would say her name out loud after that.
I have been sorting the wardrobe trunks. Under the spangled costume of the little flyer, Isla, I found a pad of ticket stubs from the Bradford run, and on the back of one someone had drawn a heart in biro. Just the outline, a little lopsided, pressed so hard it has come through to the stub beneath. I know that hand. It belonged to the boy who ran the lights, who left in October with a cruise line's brochure in his pocket and not a word to anybody.
I thought about throwing it out. Instead I put it in my coat and walked to the far edge of the field, where the grass gives way to mud and the bins from the services stand empty. I wanted to see whether anyone would notice a heart drawn in a place nobody looks. Nobody did, which is the nature of hearts drawn small.
I'm sending it to you because you always said I kept the wrong things. Keep it, if you like. Tell me the trunks will be sorted before the buyers come on Friday, and tell me you're coming to see the last night, even if the last night is only the three of us and a radio.
Love, Nell
