Matching sisters script tattoos with heart

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

Two matching tattoos of the word sisters written in thin, cursive script, each joined to a small open heart outline. The linework is fine and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The pair sits on separate limbs against a pale skin tone and a dark background, with the two designs placed at a similar angle.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had the tiller under one arm and a mug of tea going cold on the roof, watching her sister Bea try to loop a rope round the lock gate bollard without soaking her sleeve. The Mary Ann had been their father's boat before she was theirs, and the paint on her cabin still showed the ghost of his initials. Between Stourport and Bewdley the river ran brown and quick after the rain, and the willows leaned over it as if they were listening.

Bea gave up on the rope and sat on the gunwale, swinging her legs above the water. "Mum rang," she said. "She wants us to sell."

"She wants us to be sensible."

"It's the same thing to her."

Nell steered past a heron standing on one leg in the shallows, unbothered by them. She thought of the note their father had left in the cabin drawer, a single line in his cramped hand: Keep her moving, and keep each other. They had argued over what it meant for three winters. Now the words sat in her chest like a stone kept in a coat pocket.

At the next lock Bea jumped down to work the paddles, and Nell watched her, the two of them bound by one word and a small open heart they had had inked the summer after the funeral, in a backstreet parlour in Kidderminster where neither dared look first. Nell eased the tiller and let the boat sink slow and steady in the chamber. "Leave the top gate," she called down. "We're not selling."
