Follow your heart script and arrow on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a forearm with the words follow your heart written in flowing cursive script across the skin. Below the lettering sits a thin arrow with feathered fletching and a small solid heart on its shaft. The ink is a dark, almost black, fine line with even weight, set against a pale, softly lit background.

Dear Mum, the lift in Kestrel House has been broken since Tuesday, so I've been climbing fourteen floors with the shopping and your last letter folded in my coat pocket. By the eighth landing I'm usually cursing you for the price of stamps, and by the twelfth I'm grateful for the view of the reservoir, which on a clear day looks like someone spilled milk across the hills.

I saw Dani off at the coach station on Sunday. She had the green rucksack with the zip held shut by a safety pin, and she'd had an arrow inked on the inside of her wrist at the parlour on Crossley Road, the one next to the chippy. She showed me the little solid heart on the shaft, then tugged her sleeve down as if the rain might smudge it. "You can stop looking at it like that," she said. "It's only a bit of ink."

Here's what I didn't tell her. I bought a Leeds train ticket on the Thursday and never used it. It's in the kitchen drawer now, with the takeaway menus and the spare keys to a flat we don't live in anymore. Every morning I open the drawer, look at the ticket, and shut it again, which I suppose counts as progress.

Dani's postcard came this morning, a lighthouse on the front and nothing written except her biro handwriting on the back: Jo, it's a long way up but the view is worth it. Underneath she'd drawn an arrow pointing at our stairwell, then at my door, then at the kettle. I've put the kettle on. Love, Jo.
