Black fine line script tattoo reading You'll be in my heart always across the upper chest.

Script quote across the upper chest

Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a single line of cursive script tattooed on skin, reading "You'll be in my heart always". The letters are drawn in thin, even black linework with a slightly looping, connected flow. The image is monochrome, with the skin tones warm and the tattoo sitting centrally in a soft, slightly angled frame.

The tide is wrong for leaving, Dan, and you know it. Mrs Pryce at the chandlery says the glass has dropped twice since Sunday, but you've already stowed the bread and the tinned peaches in the forecastle, and the skipper is shouting your name from the quay. So I'm writing this on the back of a ferry timetable. Alfie has promised to hand it over, because I'd rather you read it alone in the cabin than hear me say it on the slip with half the harbour watching.

I won't pretend I'm brave about it. The gulls on the breakwater have been screaming since dawn, and I've been counting the knots in the scarf I knitted you, the one with the dropped stitch near the end that you say is my signature. Take it anyway. Take the blue enamel mug with the chip too, the one you insist on drinking tea from at four in the morning like a man in a film.

Here's what I've decided. You'll be gone eleven weeks, twelve if the weather turns rotten. When the nets come up empty and the cook sings hymns off-key, look for the lamp in the front window of number nine Harbour Street, because I'll leave it burning every night until your boat ties up again. You'll be in my heart always, and I've written that so often in the margins of the tide tables that the biro has worn a groove in the paper.

Come back with salt in your hair and a story that doesn't involve a shark. Mind the bar on the way out. The water's cold this time of year, and I haven't got anyone else to tell me off for swimming in it.

Love, Nell
