Forest and birds across forearms
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three raised forearms show a continuous black and grey forest scene, with tall pine trees on the outer arms and a leafless tree with a flock of birds in the centre. The trunks and branches are drawn in fine, realistic linework, while the ground and lower edge fade into stippled dotwork shading. The shading builds a misty, hazy depth against a plain green background.

Dear Ada, the mist has sat on the Gorse Hill plantation since Tuesday, so thick that Mr Fairley walked straight into the bare oak at the boundary and swore the tree had come at him on purpose. I'm writing this by the stove with my boots still steaming, because the sun won't be up for another hour and there's nothing to do until it is but listen to the birds start.

They start in the dead oak first. Rooks, mostly, then a flock of something smaller that I can't name, lifting off the bare branches all at once like someone shook out a sheet. I counted forty-one the first morning. Fairley says rooks don't fly in that formation before light and that I should stop counting things and mark the spruce we're meant to be felling. I've marked nine. The old ones at the edge are staying standing, because the man from the Commission said so and because I asked him to.
Yesterday I walked the far row down to where the ground goes soft and black, all those needles rotted to a dark speckle underfoot, and the pines went up grey into the fog until you couldn't tell where the trunks stopped and the sky began. I thought of you saying I'd never draw anything that wasn't straight. You were wrong about that, but I never told you so.
Tell Mum the kettle's on in here and I'm fine. The first birds are going up now, I can hear them over the stove. Come up at Easter if the road's open. I'll show you the oak.
