Forest and stream sleeve on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large black and grey tattoo shows a woodland scene with tall, slender tree trunks rising into a misty canopy above a rocky stream bed. A fallen log and rounded stones sit in the foreground, with shaded undergrowth and light falling through the trees. Soft gradients and fine detail give the piece depth and a photographic finish across the arm.

Dessie and I fished it every summer from a fallen ash that lay across the water like a bridge nobody had finished. A flat grey stone sat on the end of the trunk, rounded at the edges, and we called it the chimney because it stuck up like one. Above us the trees went on forever, their trunks thin and pale in the haze, and the light came through in long slats that made the moss look lit from inside. You could forget the flats were there. Then the wind would turn and you'd smell somebody's dinner drifting down from the fourth floor.
The surveyors came in March with orange tape and clipboards. Mam said the pipe would be in by autumn and the wood would be a car park by Easter. I didn't argue. The night before the digger came I went down with a torch and a flask and sat on the log until my hands went numb, listening to the water find its way over the stones.
In the morning the chimney was gone from the log, and I never told anyone where I'd put it. It sits on the windowsill of my flat on the ninth floor now, facing the trees, and when the window's open I can still hear the beck under the concrete, talking to itself in the drain grate.
