Pine forest tattoo on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo depicts a dense forest of tall pine trees, with slender trunks rising up the forearm and branches fading toward a pale gap of sky. Fine shading and detailed linework build depth in the foliage and trunks, with darker tones near the base of the arm. The photograph is black and white and shows the forearm alongside a white t-shirt and jeans with a chain at the hip.

The forest came down to the river the spring the ferryman's wife went missing, and nobody in Harrowgate thought to ask the trees about it. Old Tobias Quill said they had been walking closer for a generation, pines marching down the hill one season at a time, their trunks grey as wet slate and their tops lost in weather. The villagers left their shutters closed and their dogs indoors, and the children were told the pines kept count of anyone who went in.

Her son, Edwin, was nine and stubborn. He took a loaf, a tin cup and a length of red wool, tied one end to the gate post and walked in following the wool. The needles softened his footsteps. Above him the trunks rose straight as church pillars and the light came down in grey coins that never reached the floor. He tied the wool to every fifth tree, the way his mother had taught him to mark a fishing line, and he counted them aloud so the forest could hear him not being afraid.

At the hundredth tree the wool ran out. He stood a long while in the hush, then saw a pale gap far overhead where the branches thinned, a patch of sky the colour of milk. He climbed. The bark bit his palms. When he reached the place where the trunks gave out into open air he found his mother sitting on a fallen log, mending a net with the same patient hands she used for the ferry rope, and she looked up and said he had come the long way round.

They walked out together by the wool, and the pines let them go, though Edwin swore afterwards that every one of them had leaned a little to watch.
