Mountain cabin and wildlife scene on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder, showing a moon and birds above snowy mountains, with tall pine trees framing a log cabin. Below, a deer stands beside the cabin, and a wolf-like animal and a large bear-like animal sit among rocks at the lower edge of the design. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft gradients in the sky and mountains and sharp contrast in the dark tree trunks and foreground.

The moon had hung over the ridge for three nights when Halvard Brenn's dogs stopped barking at the wolves and began barking at the cabin itself. He took the lantern from its hook, pulled on his sheepskin, and went out past the pines, where the snow squeaked under his boots and the cold got into his teeth.

The deer was standing by the woodpile. It had come down every winter since his wife died, and he had never once stopped it eating from the trough. Beyond it, on the path, sat a grey wolf with its head low, and under the boulders at the foot of the slope a bear lay curled, breathing so slowly that the snow on its back hardly moved. Halvard counted what he had left in the store: six sacks of barley, a side of salt pork, and enough kindling for perhaps forty nights. Four mouths, if he counted the deer, and he did.

He did not reach for the rifle. He filled the trough to the brim, set the lantern on the step so the light fell across the path, and told the wolf aloud that the deer was not his to keep and not theirs either, only his to share until the thaw. The wolf looked at him for a long time, then rose and trotted into the trees. The bear did not move at all.

In April the snow went grey and rotten, and Halvard walked up to the pass to see whether the way was clear. Wolf prints ran beside a line of cloven tracks towards the high meadows. Near the rocks he found the bear's bed, pressed flat and empty, with a tuft of brown fur caught on a splinter of the woodpile. The trough was licked clean. He lit the lantern that night anyway and left it burning on the step.
