Small arrow tattoo on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black arrow with a thin shaft and a pointed head sits on the inner wrist of an extended arm. The linework is fine and solid, with no shading, and the ink is the only colour against the skin. The arm rests on a lap covered in a dark patterned fabric, with a braided bracelet and a white band nearby.

Dear Tomas,

The surveyors finished the stone line on Tuesday, and they left one arrow behind for me to find. Not carved, nothing so grand. Father's old fletching knife had a sliver of blade ground down to a point, and the man from the Ordnance office let me borrow it for the afternoon, because I told him I was the only one in the village who could sight a straight line without a string. He laughed, then he watched me do it.

The boundary runs along the ridge above Gallow Beck, and where it crosses the bridge the Scots side and the English side disagree about whose fence is whose. I marked the post with a shaft pointing east, towards your new town, so you'd know which way home lies if the trains stop running again. Mam says the arrow is a fool's compass. I told her every good compass started as a fool's hunch.

Here is the thing I didn't expect. When the surveyor's clerk stamped his ledger, he asked what the arrow was for, and I said it was for whoever comes after us to read. He wrote that down word for word. Now it's in a book in Carlisle with my name beside it, which is more than any of the Hallorans ever got.

Come home by the spring fair. Bring the good chisel. I'll show you where I put the point.

Yours, Nell
