Black ink lettering reading forever faithful, looping through an infinity symbol, with a black eagle emblem beside it, tattooed on the back.

Forever faithful infinity script on back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows the words forever faithful in flowing black script, with the letters forming the loop of an infinity symbol. A solid black emblem featuring an eagle sits to the right of the lettering. The ink is black with no shading or colour, and the design is centred on pale skin with a plain background.

You are counting the takings on an upturned crate in a wet field outside Boston, Lincolnshire, the last week of September. The big top has three holes in it now, and Mr Albright has stopped looking up at the canvas when he talks. Your brother's rigging is coiled by the wagon, the wire gone slack and grey with dew, and the generator coughs somewhere behind the caravans like it has heard the news too.

Caesar sits on his perch by the ticket booth, as he has for nineteen years. He is an old golden eagle with a bald patch on one shoulder, and he has never once flown off, even on the nights the flap was open and the field was dark. You used to think of him as the show's one honest act. Albright wants to sell him to a falconer in Norfolk for a bundle of notes folded tight enough to fit in a waistcoat pocket. You tell him no, and he says that is what he expected you to say, which is almost worse.

On the last night you walk the wire without a net for nine people and a dog. Halfway across, you hear the jesses rattle, and when you reach the far platform Caesar is already lifting from his perch. He circles the tent once, high and slow, drawing a loop over the crowd, and then he drops onto your shoulder with his full weight as if he has just come home from a long way off.

Afterwards you carry him to the van under a sky with no stars in it, and the lights go out one by one behind you. Nobody paid to see a promise kept. You keep it anyway.
