Cherry blossom branch on a calf
Botanical · Calf · Colour · Photo
A branch of pink cherry blossoms with thin brown twigs climbs diagonally up the outer lower leg, with the stems tapering towards the top. The flowers have soft, blended pink shading and lighter centres, while the branches use darker brown tones with subtle shading. The image is a close crop of the leg against a plain light background.

The ferry from Tsuruga had been three days at sea when the cook's boy, Kenji, began to count the cherry trees he remembered. There were seven on the road above his mother's house, and one in the temple yard that never bloomed the same way twice. He kept the count in a cloth bag tied to his belt, one knot for each tree, because he had been told a sailor should always know what he is carrying.

On the fourth morning the captain's wife came up from the cabin with a cup of tea gone cold and found him sitting on a coil of rope, staring at the bare grey rail. She asked what he was looking for. He said nothing, only that he had lost one of his trees somewhere between the harbour and the open water. She sat beside him and told him that trees do not get lost, they only wait for the right season to be seen again. Then she pointed at the sky, where a single gull was going round and round the mast with its wings tucked in, and said it looked like it was counting too.
That evening he unknotted the bag and let the cloth drift off the stern. It floated for a while, pale against the dark water, and then the swell took it. The next dawn a branch came up on the deck from somewhere forward, pale pink blossom still clinging to its thin brown twigs, though nobody could say where it had come from or how a tree had got aboard. Kenji picked it up and carried it to the galley and set it in a jar of seawater. The captain's wife said it would not last. He said it did not have to, only to be counted once.
