Fortune favors the hustle ribbon banner
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A hand-drawn pencil design of three stacked ribbon banners with the words FORTUNE, favors the, and HUSTLE, with a curled top and tails at each end. The linework is outlined and unshaded, with a partly drawn shape sitting behind the banners. The drawing is in black and grey on a sheet of pale paper against a dark background.

Sit down on that crate, love, the wasps have had the far end of the bench and they'll not give it back before dark. Right. You want the one about Dilys Penhale and the cider barrel, or the one about the Pickett boy? The Pickett boy, then, since you've got that look.

He came up the lane in August with a pencil behind his ear and a sheet of tissue under his arm, the sort the greengrocers wrap pears in. Nobody had asked him. He'd heard the cider mill needed a banner for the harvest fair, and he had the nerve of a man who had never once been told no to his face. He drew three ribbons across the paper, one tumbling over the next, the top one curled like a shaving off a plane. FORTUNE, he wrote along the first. Then favors the. Then HUSTLE, in capitals he'd gone over twice so they'd show from the road.
Old Mr Garnett looked at it a long while through his spectacles and said the fortune would have to wait on the hustle, because nobody had ever paid a bill with a ribbon. So the boy went up the ladder and picked windfalls from under the Bramleys till his fingers went sticky, and he sold them at the gate, two pence a bag. Every bag he sold, he chalked a tally on the gatepost. By the end of the week that post looked like a ledger.
The banner went up on the Saturday, a bit crooked, and the crowd laughed at the spelling of favors. But the boy had a pocketful of coppers and a grin, and he never once let on whether it was luck or legs that got him there. That's the thing about hustle, love. From the lane it always looks like fortune.
