Small bee on an inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small cartoon-style bee sits on the inner wrist, with a rounded striped body in yellow and black, two pale wings and a short curved stinger. The linework is thin and clean, and the tattoo occupies only a small area of skin. The soft, blurred background of dark fabric and a neutral wall keeps the focus on the wrist and hand.

The skeps had gone quiet by the time I reached the south wall, which Brother Hilary said was the worst sign a beekeeper could have. He had taught me that in my first summer, when I was too proud to pull the veil down and got stung twice on the neck for it. Now I wore it, and I walked the rows with my hands tucked into my sleeves, listening for the low note that tells you a hive is grieving.

Father Edmund had died in the night in the infirmary, with the window open on the lavender. Someone had to go and tell the bees, because that is what our house has always done, and the abbot gave the task to me because I was the one who did not argue. I knocked three times on each hive, the way Hilary showed me, and said the old man's name aloud. A bee came out of the third skep and walked up my glove as though it had an appointment there.

It was a small one, round in the middle, with a band of gold across its back and a little grey in its wings where the light came through them. It stayed on my cuff while I finished the rounds. Each time I lifted my arm to wipe my brow it stayed put, and when I went into the refectory it came too, circling the bread and then settling again on the cloth at my wrist, as if it had decided I was the one to keep.

Edmund once told me that a bee which will not leave you has been given a message and must deliver it. I never did learn what he meant. I carried it to the infirmary anyway and let it walk off onto the sill, into the lavender where he could have smelled it, and then I went back out to the wall to finish the hives.
